Description

NGC7217 is an interesting specimen about 50mly away in the constellation Pegasus. With no obvious interacting neighbor, it is a bit of a curiosity. The core is reminiscent of a flocculent spiral galaxy which has patchy and discontinuous arm structure. There are a few places that appear to be a bit more organized, but on the whole the middle of this galaxy is a bit of a clumpy spiraled mess. A few inner rings of stars suggest long-past starburst activity, while the obviously prominent outer ring shows the telltale blue of massive star formation. The outer ring is encircled by an enormous spherical halo that is reminiscent of a massive lenticular galaxy. So, it would appear that this galaxy structure is really 3-in-1, exhibiting several different morphologies. What a bargain!

The leading theories suggest that an aging lenticular merged with one or even two smaller and younger galaxies to create the active rings of matter. This would help explain why we see this galactic mash-up.

Though not as small as some of the more recent targets I’ve attempted, it still has an apparent size of less than 4 arcminutes and shines at a magnitude 11. I may have had a few less than desirable nights of seeing in this batch based on what I was up against with processing this one.

Enjoy!
