Description

A study of contrasting distances. The bright Pavo Globular NGC 6752 is only 13,000 light years away. Its population of 100,000 stars is contained in a ball 100 light years across. 13,000 years is a long time ago (1,000 years before the invention of fired pottery) but that pales into insignificance compared with the 190 million years that it took the light from the interacting galaxy group NGC 6769 - NGC 6771 to reach us. Non-avian dinosurs became extinct 65 million years ago and the light from these galaxies started its journey to us 125 million years before that! It's difficult to get one's head around the immense distance involved.
