Description

The Saturn Nebula (NGC 7009) is a planetary nebula in the constellation Aquarius, located a degree west of ν Aquarii. The name of Saturn Nebula is due to its similar appearance to the planet Saturn, with its rings, seen in profile.

NGC 7009 was discovered in 1782 by William Herschel, constituting one of the first discoveries. It was so named by Lord Rosse in the 1840s, when the telescopes have improved to the point of how Saturn can be discerned.
