Description

The Dumbell Nebula, also known as M27, is a planetary nebula in the constellation Vulpecula. A planetary nebula is a nebula that contains ionized gasses that have been blown off of a dying star. The nebulae were named because they resemble and appear to be the same size as planets in a telescope, though they do not have anything to do with planets.

The Dumbell was the first planetary nebula discovered, and is easily seen in binoculars. It is 1.44 light years across and 1,360 light years away from Earth.
