Description

At the center of this widefield image of the central portion of the Constellation Cygnus The Swan is the supergiant star Gamma Cygni also known by its proper name, Sadr. This bright star lies at the center of the famous asterism known at the Northern Cross. It is located about 1,800 light years from Earth.

Set in a gorgeous landscape of stars, dust clouds, and glowing emission nebulae, this area is found along the plane of our own Milky Way Galaxy.

Also visible in this image is NGC 6910, an open star cluster with young tightly grouped stars.
