Description

M33 (The Triangulum Galaxy)

The third largest galaxy in out local group, The Triangulum Galaxy contains about 1/10th the number of stars of the Milky Way (about 40 billion vs. 400 billion). It estimated to be 2.3 to 3 million light years away and is possibly gravitationally bound to our sister galaxy Andromeda with which it may have had a close encounter in the past. This image is a combination of a monochrome image with another image made using a hydrogen-alpha filter. This limits the light captured by the camera to just the frequency of light emitted by hydrogen gas when excited by the radiation from nearby stars.
