Description

The Ring Nebula (also catalogued as M57 or NGC 6720) is a planetary nebula in the northern constellation of Lyra. Such objects are formed when a shell of ionized gas is expelled into the surrounding interstellar medium by a star in the last stages of its evolution before becoming a white dwarf. The central star, at magnitude 14.8, is difficult to spot.

M57 is 2,570 light-years from Earth.

IC 1296 is a 15th magnitude Spiral Galaxy appearing in the constellation Lyre. It is 256 million light years from our solar system.
