Description

NGC247 (or C62) is a spiral galaxy in the southern constellation of Cetus, about 11 million light years from us. It is part of the Sculptor Group of galaxies, strongly gravitationally bound with NGC253.

NGC247 has an apparent void in the northern segment of its spiral disk. Although the void does contain stars, they are significantly older and fainter than those in the surrounding galaxy. Star formation in this region apparently ceased more than 1 billion years ago.

The string of small background galaxies to the north east (upper right) of NGC247 are 355 million light years away.

North is to the right, East up.
