Here we have a look at NGC 891 an edge-on unbarred spiral galaxy about 30 million light-years away in the constellation Andromeda.

Similar in size and structure to our Milky Way it is often commented upon just how similar they are. One perceivable difference is the filamentary structures emanating towards the core possibly caused by supernova explosions pushing matters out from the core towards the halo. That said the scale of such an event would be immense so I would like to research that a little more for validity.

The edge on shot also provides a nice view of the central bulge, the main galaxy and its outer halo.

It was the filamentary detail that provided the challenge on this image (the data itself was excellent and quite easy to process, or so i thought) first pass revealed little in the way of filamentary detail.

Not content with that an experiment of extracting the lum from just the RGB frames and merging with a darkened version of the main lum frame revealed the detail i was looking for, albeit after 3 hours of delicate processing! An interesting point to note (for me any way) was that a lot of the detail perceived was achieved not just through manipulating the lum but also through generating contrast in the colour.

I have left the area of nebulosity/spike remnant at the bottom as did not want to lose the little fuzyy 1AXG J022353+4212.
