Description

The Inca mind saw the night sky differently from Europeans. Where Europeans saw patterns in the light, the Inca also saw patterns in the dark. What we call the Milky Way the Incas called “Mayu”, the life-giving river of the heavens. The Mayu was a reflection of the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley from where this picture was taken. High up in the Andes Mountains, not only did the Incas see constellations in what was luminous, but they also constellations within the dark blotches of the Great Rift of the Milky Way. The dark constellations represented the silhouettes of animals that came to drink from the waters of the Mayu.
