Description

Emission nebula placed at south of constellation of Perseus. NGC 1499 is known by the name of California Nebula because your shape had should remind on 1885 to your discoverer, at that time the amateur astronomer Barnard, the shape of the State of California in the United States of America.

The red brightness of nebula is because your H-alpha emission caused by the star Menchib (Xi Persei) at upper. Even though 2,5º wide, your poor surface brightness do that hardly can be observed visually and only can be saw in detail by photography.
