Description

The Dumbbell Nebula, M27, is a classical example of a planetary nebula. As such, it is the remains of a supernova explosion, which leaves a residual white dwarf star at the centre. There is a star visible at the centre of this structure, which may be the same one.

It is about 1360 light years away and has been expanding for something like 10,000 years. It is just over 1 light year in diameter so it is fairly large in the sky, and is an easy object in telescopes and even binoculars.

Description: As well as a total reprocessing, I've now added extra data collected at the same time: luminance plus Ha and O III. These latter two I added by using the NBRGB script in PicInsight.
