Description

The California Nebula, NGC 1499, is a glowing cloud of hydrogen gas about 100 light years across lying in the constellation Perseus. The nebula is just 1,500 light years away in our own Orion arm of the Milky Way. The nebula is lit up by the nearby hot blue star Xi Perseus. Across Perseus to the right of NGC 1499 lies IC 1985 and IC 348 , an open cluster and bluish reflection nebula surrounded by dust.
