The Lagoon & Trifid Nebulas during the summer Milky Way from the perspective of Florida. Imaged this with a very rough polar alignment due to the heat, humidity and swarm of mosquitoes. Used the ED80 refractor coupled to a Canon T4i (unmodded, stock). Achieved focus with a bahtinov mask nice and quickly. Had to do a few exposures to get both nebula lined up in the same composition area so that I could expose both of them together at this field of view. Very minor crop of the original image. 600mm F7.5 and APS-C sensor size. Exposure was 60 seconds long at ISO 3200 and F7.5 of the scope. Stacked only about 6 frames total so 360 seconds of integration time only here with a single dark frame, no flats, no biases. This was mainly a "proof of concept" attempt to see if I could reliably image with my dSLR (T4i) because my other APS-C (7D) would cause so much vibration that it showed up in images due to it's aggressive mirror slap. The T4i is gentle and didn't vibrate on my flimsy imaging train. I'm learning still, so this is the "proof of concept" in terms of learning to do DSO at all. Next summer I will have a guiding setup and do an hour or two of integration and the full gambit of darks, flats and bias frames to try to make a much better signal filled image to work with. In the mean time, again, this is at ISO 3200 from a T4i.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
