Description

The "Ghost of Jupiter" is a planetary nebula in the constellation Hydra. Its name comes from the fact that it is about the same size as Jupiter. It is also called the "Eye Nebula" due to its shape and features. Coincidently, it was also near Jupiter last night. Weather was not great and I almost gave up on it, but I setup MaximDL for short exposures and left it alone to continue imaging while I worked on something else. Considering the weather, it came out pretty good. Since it is such a small and bright object, I process the stars (background) and nebula separately and put it all back together at the end. To get to the detail in such a small object, I use a combination of up sampling and deconvolution. Compare to an image taken from a 32" telescope... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NGC_3242#/media/File:NGC3242.jpg.
