Description

M42, the Orion Nebula, is probably the best-known nebula of all, since it is visible to the naked eye. It is a prominent part of the “sword of Orion”, beneath (south of) the 3 stars of the belt, and the whole sword is shown in this image. At about 1300 light-years away it is the closest region of massive star formation to the Earth.

This LRGB image is a work in progress. It consists of a set of 300 sec images during one night and is very clearly overexposed: the Trapezium region in the centre is totally saturated. The next step will be to use shorter exposures, probably 60 seconds. I also have some internal reflections from bright stars showing up as little triangles.

More work needed!
