Description

This is sort of a Hubble palette using a DSLR and a camera lens. I'm using an Astronomik UHC EOS Clip-Filter to take both Ha and Oiii in one shot. This ultra high contrast filter is not so narrowband. It cuts UV and about half of the blue, and keeps most of the green, so the UHC's green has Oiii, Hb, and a lot of other lines in it. There is a moderately wide cut around the Na line, and then about half of the red and most of the near IR are passed, so the UHC’s red has both Ha and Sii. For Sii I use a real narrowband 12nm Astronomik Sii EOS Clip-Filter. Even though the UHC's red has all of the same Sii in it, the difference between the UHC's red and Sii is enough to create two separate color layers. The Canon Da is designed for astronomical work, and it lets in more near IR than the standard model. However, it is designed to be dual purpose, and can also be used for standard photography, not too much IR is let in to prevent the red from getting blown out when taking pictures of people. The Canon 200mm f/2.8 is a sharp lens, but with the UHC filter it suffers from a lot of both longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberration. Even with all these compromises, the result is quite a bit more Hubble palette like than a standard one shot color RGB.
