Description

NGC 4565 is an edge-on spiral in Coma Berenices and is about 40 million light years distant.  It was discovered by Sir William Herschel in 1785 and is more luminous than the Andromeda Galaxy.  There is much speculation as to the nature of the central bulge, but the overall shape suggests it is a barred spiral.  Spitzer Space Telescope confirmed the presence of a central bar and pseudobulge as well as an inner ring.

A classic edge-on galaxy perfect for spring time with several interesting background galaxies.  I previously hadn't noticed NGC 4565 has a warped disk until doing some research on warped galaxies.  A closer look at the image reveals one of the outer tips curves "up" and the other outer tip curves down.

Imaged over several nights:  Apr 18, 25, 27-28, 2022.
