Description

The Monkey Head Nebula (NGC 2174) is an emission nebula encompassing several loose clusters of young stars (presumably born from the gas in this nebula). This image is captured using the traditional Hubble Palette (false color, mapping sulfur, hydrogen, oxygen gasses to red, green and blue respectively). This nebula actually covers an area of the sky larger than the full moon and if it were visible to the human eye it would take the appearance of a large red cloud due to the overwhelming contribution of Hydrogen Alpha gas (visible in the red spectrum).

It takes its name from it actual resemblance to a monkey's head (facing the left edge of the image).

NGC 2174 is located in the constellation of Orion and lies some 6,400 light years (3.76 × 10^16 miles) distant.
