Description

The Leo Triplet consists of three spiral typ galaxies and is located in the constellation Leo some 35 million light years distant.

M65 is the spiral galaxy in the lower right of the image. It is an older galaxy and has very little star formation (some has occurred in the outer arms recently). This galaxy is viewed nearly a 45 degree angle.

M66 is the spiral galaxy in the upper right of the image (blue and brown). This galaxy is almost viewed "face on".

Finally NGC 3628 can be seen on the left of the image. This galaxy is viewed edge-on and has a length of nearly 300,000 light years. The central yellow area in the galaxy's central "disk bulge" and the blue area with the dark dust lanes are the galaxy's arms.
