Description

Mosaic out of 5 images - Molecular Clouds in Constellation Chameleon

The southern constellation of Chamaeleon (at a distance of ∼160 - 180 pc) contains one of the nearest groups of dark clouds.

There are 3 main complexes. Cha I, Cha II and Cha III.

This mosaic shows in the upper right corner the dark cloud complex

Chameleon I, which extends down to the lower left where it reaches the

border of dark cloud complex Chameleon III which i show in another picture

in my gallery of astrobin.

The "Chamaeleon I" complex is a place of young low mass stars, resulting in various reflection nebulae - IC 2631, and the blue nebula Ced 111 and the white reflection nebula Ced 110.

The obscuring mass of thick brown dust in the upper right region absorbs the blue light of distant stars making them appear much redder than they actually are. This process of interstellar reddening also changes the light of galaxies behind, reducing the blue light of these distant galaxies.
