Description

Captured at Barreal, a small village in the argentinean Andes at 1700m altitude near Cerro Mercedario. The LMC is of course a spectacualar highlight of the southern sky, and contains a wealth of details visible even in a small binocular. A lot of star formation is going on, the brightest region being the famous Tarantula nebula - that would outshine M42 by far if in the same distance. According to newer theories, both LMC and SMC are not regulat companions of the MilkyWay, but freshly captured by her and just on their first time in orbit. The nearly intact barred spiral structure of the LMC and bursting star formation unseen in old companions are the main arguments for that new view. There is a faint big halo visible in this picture, as some filaments of galactic cirrus bekonging to the Milky WAy.
