Description

Raw frames courtesy of Deep Sky West Remote Observatory in New Mexico, USA. (deepskywest.com) Data obtained with FSQ 106EDXiii / QSI683wsg / Lodestar / Paramount MyT.

12 hrs total integration (16x900s R, 16x900s G, 16x900s B). The palette is RGB.

This is an experiment to stretch in the HSV domain. The idea is to stretch V for visibility, eroding field stars along the way. Then combine with original H and S to preserve color info. I found that I needed to smooth the S plane with a 3 pixel Gaussian to avoid some artifacts around the cores of the brighter stars.

While this technique seems to bring out much more of the fain detail on the left side of the image, I actually found a more direct method by working in HSI color space, and stretching only the I component. The result is much more free from artifacts around bright star cores, and leads to the same enhancement of faint nebular details on the left.
