Description

Markarian's Chain is a collection of galaxies in the constellation Virgo that appears to form a curved line. The members include M84, M86, NGC 4477, NGC 4473, NGC 4461, NGC 4458, NGC 4438 and NGC 4435.

Also in this field is M87, a very large elliptical galaxy at the lower left and is some 53 million light years away. It is one of the largest galaxy near the Milky Way and houses a supermassive black hole. From infalling material, this black hole powers a long jet that extends 5 thousand light years and is visible at the 2 o'clock position in the magnified view of version B. The jet is one of the brightest radio sources and was one of the first radio objects discovered. I was surprised to find the jet visible in a modest focal length scope. The TMB92SS with reducer gives about a 400mm focal length.

Among these galaxies are numerous distant galaxies highlighted in the annotated version A.
