Description

This is a 4 panel (2x2 panels, 7847x6294 px) Ha image of SH2-240. It was collected between 2/28/2017 and 3/4/2017 from a dark site north of Manhattan Kansas using a TeleVue 127NPis at FR5.2, QHY16200A with an Astrodon 5nm Ha filter and a 10Micron G1000HPS unguided. Total integration is 19h00 from 57 20 minute subs. The exact FOV of this image is 4˚5'13.3"' x 3˚16'41.4". The image scale is 1.875"/px. North is up. I had intended to collect 24 hours but strong winds and unforecasted clouds kept getting in the way. Processing was done using PixInsight with final touches in PhotoShop. Because I was able to get a few good nights of imaging in the beginning and graded and weighted the subframes the image ended up with FWHM of 1.855" and eccentricity of 0.5163 which is fairly decent. PI measures 16,164 stars in the image.

from wikipedia:

Simeis 147, also known as the Spaghetti Nebula, SNR G180.0-01.7 or Sharpless 2-240, is a supernova remnant (SNR) in the Milky Way, straddling the border between the constellations Auriga and Taurus. Discovered in 1952 at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory using a 25-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, it is difficult to observe due to its extremely low brightness.

The nebulous area is fairly large with an almost spherical shell and filamentary structure. The remnant has an apparent diameter of approximately 3 degrees, an estimated distance of approximately 3000 (±350) light-years, and an age of approximately 40,000 years.

It is believed that after its stellar explosion a rapidly spinning neutron star known as pulsar PSR J0538+2817 was left behind in the nebula core, emitting a strong radio signal.
