Description

My first light using my AT72ED. This doublet has certainly proven itself regarding image quality, I noticed no aberration, though in this first attempt I believe the focus tube had unfortunately shifted to a very slight angle and caused some stars to stretch on the edges (even with the field flattener). This scope has an excellent FoV (even without the flattener), I look forward to imaging the rising Virgo cluster and other larger objects later this year!

This was my first target for the evening, and after some considerable frustration in focusing and aligning both this scope and the Orion 50mm Guidescope for the first time, I decided to take a quick Orion for my satisfaction - to replace the relative disappointment of my light pollution-riddled attempt from late November. Orion hung in the sky to my south over Wichita, so light pollution limited my exposures to 90s, though if I had tried from another location I have no doubt I could have reached 300s.

I learned many new DeNoising techniques for this image - and as a result I think I am beginning to become truly comfortable in the use of Photoshop for processing my images.

Workflow: Levels Stretch, double pass of GradientXTerminator, Curves Stretch, split image into RGB and artificial Luminence layer. Sharpened Lum image, increase saturation on RGB image, DeNoised the backgrounds of both and then recombined. Further color balance and saturation edits afterwards, followed by some star correction and reduction.
