NGC 6979, aka Pickering's Triangle

This is NGC 6979, aka Pickering's Triangle. This nebula, along with NGC 6960, and NGC 6992, comprise the Veil Nebula in Cygnus. The image was captured in September of 2013 at the SDAA Club Site near Tierra del Sol, CA. It is comprised of 19 600-second subframes taken through a modified Canon 350D on a Stellarvue SV102ED2.

One note of interest in this image was the challenge of making the nebula the object of interest: this target is deep in the Milky Way (my goodness, this is 2017: can't we come up with a better name for our galaxy than "The Milky Way?" Sheeesh!) , and as such, the star field is incredibly dense in the unprocessed image. I ended up using a technique from the Pixinsight forums (with the aid of a few very useful process icons) that involved creating a good star mask and iteratively applying a Morphological Transform to the image. After that, I applied a small negative Curves Tranformation to the image to further dim the stars. The result was a fairly natural (to my eye, at least) diminution of the star field.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection.
