Description

Messier 46 (also known as M46 or NGC 2437) is an open cluster in the constellation of Puppis. It lies around 5,500 light-years away. There are about 500 stars in the cluster. The planetary nebula NGC 2438 is visible in the image but does not show the same movement as the cluster so is not part of it.

Location: Blue Mountain Vista Observatories, New Ringgold PA

Optics: Starizona Hyperion f/8 12.5 inch, FL 2540 mm

Mount: Paramount ME

Camera: Sbig STL-11000

Guiding: Self-guided

Exposure: RGB: R:6x5 min, G:7x5 min, B:9x5 min for a total of 1.9 hrs.

Processing: Image acquisition using Maxim DL and CCD Autopilot. The Lum and RGB color images were created in Maxim with final processing in Photoshop.
