Description

My last few posts have ended up being reviews of small aperture scopes/lenses, so here is one for the Stellarvue SV66ED. This is a beautiful telescope that I don't find very useful. It is a two element ED that is good, but not as a good as a three element APO. While only 400mm f/6, it is not that small or light. The biggest problem is it has a Crayford focuser. I would say avoid Crayford focusers for astro-photography. They are hard to lock down, can't support a lot of weight, and suffer from differential flexture. With a 0.8x reducer flattener and APS-C DSLR, this unit sags making the optical train tilted and off axis. Better to get a well made rack and pinon or helical focuser.
