Description

M57, informally called the "Ring Nebula" in the constellation of Lyra. It is classified as a "planetary nebula" in that it could be mistaken for a planet due to its circular shape, but in reality it is an expanding shell of material expelled by the explosive actions of a red giant star blowing off its outer layers in the process of evolving into a white dwarf. The progenitor star can be seen faintly at magnitude 14.8 in the middle of the shell.
