Description

This is the open star cluster M38 in the constellation of Auriga. Open star clusters consist of stars formed together from the same nebula and generally dissipate over time. M38 is roughly 200 million years old, making it an intermediate aged cluster, and lies at a distance of 4200 light years. In this image at the lower right of M38 is the more distant cluster, NGC 1907, at a distance of 4500 light years. It's also much older at 500 million years of age. Also, surrounding faint red nebulosity can be seen in several areas.
