Description

The "Seagull Nebula - IC2177" in the constellation of Monoceros. Most of the nebula is glowing hydrogen...hydrogen atoms excited to emission of photons under two energy levels...hydrogen-alpha glowing red and hydrogen-beta glowing blue.

Also known as Gum1, IC2177 somewhat resembles the shape of a seagull, thus its more common name. Actually, the designation IC2177 only refers to the emission nebula representing the seagull's "wings"...the brighter "head" nebula is known separately as NGC 2327. A dark nebula protrudes into this nebula from the east.
