Description

This 1 mile diameter icy rock, discovered in 1858, visits earth every 5.5 years. Although this true color image was taken at its closest approach to earth ever (13 million miles), the greenish comet did not have a tail and was not a particularly spectacular sight. It is a member of the Jupiter family of comets, since its orbit is primarily influenced by Jupiter. It is believed to have originated from the Kuiper Belt, which is a large band of small icy bodies just beyond Neptune.
