Description

NGC 7023 is a beautiful reflection nebula in Cepheus ... you might be interested in knowing how it became known as "the Iris Nebula". Years ago ... back in the early color film days ... I imaged this object from the Sunglow Ranch in AZ. When the film was processed and scanned into a positive, the intense blue color became obvious. Looking over my shoulder my wife Daphne said ..." That looks just like an Iris ( the flower )." This was probably the first time this object had been photographed in color and so we called it "The Iris Nebula". Surprisingly ... the name stuck ... it was Daphne who came up with the name. (NOTE ... we found the image on an old computer ... it is posted.)
This version of NGC 7023 was made with an SBIG 16803 camera, Astrodon filters, and an RCOS 14.5" Classical Cassegrain. It is an LRGB image ... 1200 seconds X 12 L binned 1 X 1 and the RGB binned 2 X 2. Processed in CCDStack and PS CS 5.
