Description

M53 is a globular cluster in the constellation Coma Berenices and lies some 60000ly away. As a globular cluster, it contains hundreds of thousands of older metal-rich stars that are densely packed and bound by gravity. The adjacent globular cluster NGC5053 is about the same distance, but the much lower mass of the system makes it appear dimmer. There is evidence that the two globulars have interacted in the past as a tidal bridge has been detected between them.
