Description

M5 is a mag 5.9 globular cluster located in the Serpens constellation at a declination of +2 degrees.  It is about 25,000 light years away and is 17 arc-minutes in diameter.  This corresponds to an actual diameter of about 130 light years.

Scientists estimate that it contains as many as 500,000 stars. Note the large number of bright bluish stars grouped around the core of the cluster. This object is bright enough to be visible with the naked eye from a dark sky location.
