Description

NGC 246 is a planetary nebula in the constellation Cetus. According to Wikipedia it is roughly 1,600 light-years away. and the nebula's central star is the 12th magnitude white dwarf HIP 3678.

From this image it is clear that the central star is a double star.

This is RGB data (with a little bit of Ha) from the Liverpool Telescope that I stacked in Nebulosity 4 and processed in Photoshop CS5. Filters and exposures used:

sdss-r 15 x 90 s (for red channel)

Ha 2 x 120 s (mixed 13% into red channel)

Bessell B + sdss-g 17 x 90 s (for blue channel)

Bessell V 10 x 90 s (for green channel)
