Description

The Eagle Nebula (Messier 16) is a young open cluster of star in the constellation Serpens, and is about 7000 light years distant. The nebula is part of a diffuse HII region of active star formation. The central part of the nebula was made famous by the Hubble Telescope's image know as the Pillars of Creation, which depict dark areas which are star-forming regions.
