Description

Rounding out a productive month of imaging, I decided to have a shot at Jupiter. Moon was illuminating the sky pretty well so Deep Sky was not an option.

Europa is around 3 o'clock just outside Jupiter's edge. Io is at 9 o'clock a little further out. Ganymede, not visible here, is inside the disk at around 11 o'clock lost in a Northern cloud band.

This is the first time I've imaged a planet while guiding. Guiding seems to be essential in keeping the target centralized, or even in, the super magnified FOV. With this setup, Jupiter occupies well over half of the image height and my AVX mount is capable of keeping it centralized by itself for only a few seconds. The image stack is the best 15% of 10,000 frames shot at ISO 800 and 13 frames a second. I did try the same imaging setup a few days ago with my Tele Vue 2x Barlow but the extra magnification of 3x makes a big difference.

The wheels of progress turn pretty slowly in my observatory but as long as I make progress from the last time I image a target, I'm happy. This seems to be the case here so guiding and 3x Barlow have paid off.
