Description

NGC 2506 (Caldwell 54) is an open cluster of stars, discovered by William Herschel in 1791, in the constellation of Monoceros.

At 11 300 light-years from Earth, this cluster has an apparent dimension of 7 minutes of arc, a diameter of about 12 light-years.

It is an old cluster, with an estimated age of 1.1 billion years.

NGC 2506 is a very interesting object to observe. It includes about 150 bright stars concentrated in its center.

NGC 2506 (Caldwell 54) est un amas ouvert d'étoiles, découvert par William Herschel en 1791, dans la constellation de la Licorne.

A 11 300 années-lumière de la Terre, cet amas a une dimension apparente de 7 minutes d'arc, soit un diamètre d'environ 12 années-lumière.

C'est un vieil amas, avec un âge estimé de 1,1 milliard d'années.

NGC 2506 est un objet très intéressant à observer. Il comprend environ 150 étoiles brillantes concentrées en son centre.
