Description

When I first got into astrophotography my wife told me that I should get an Instagram account to post my pictures on. I didn't know much about Instagram at the time (for which I was heavily berated by her as well as my younger sisters) so I told her to go ahead and create one for me and I would post my photos as I finished them. As she was creating my account she asked me what name I wanted; I told her "Brad Burgess" but to her that was boring. She soon came up with (no joke) "Andromedad12" and to this day that is my Instagram name (feel free to find me if you don't believe it!).

Recently I realized that I can't be "Andromedad12" without actually having a picture of my favorite galaxy (besides the Milky Way) on my Instagram account or on Astrobin. I'm of course of talking about the Andromeda Galaxy which I was fortunate enough to image on a trip to west Texas over Labor Day. This extraordinary galaxy is 2.5 million light years from Earth and is the nearest neighbor to the Milky Way. As most know, the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy are slated to collide in 4.5 billion years.

For this one I attempted an HDR composition (which came out nicely I think) composed of 10 ten minute exposures and 14 fifteen second exposures. One would think that there would be a ton of noise in the 10 minute exposures but I was astounded to see very little; those who say "there's no substitute for dark skies" are definitely onto something. I had a blast imaging this one in the company of my wife's family and hope to go back again soon!

P.S. I got 4 other images while vacationing in West Texas so stay tuned!
