Description

This object, also known as NGC 7585, is a rarely imaged disturbed elliptical galaxy located 150 million light years away in the constellation of Aquarius at a declination of -4 degrees. The galaxy spans almost 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 110,000 light years.

Arp put this galaxy in the category of "Galaxies with Amorphous Spiral Arms". These "amorphous arms" are star streams believed to be caused by a long ago merger with another galaxy. The star streams are beautiful and intricate - I need to obtain more integration time to reduce the image noise and to capture more detail.

Two other interesting galaxies are seen at right and left. NGC 7576 is on the left, the same distance away as NGC 7585. It has a bright inner section, separated from the dimmer outer disk by a dark band. Although these two galaxies (NGC 7576 and NGC 7685) are the same distance away, NGC 7576 doesn't look disturbed to me.

The fantastic galaxy collision on the right is NGC 7592. I love this object - the extended star stream loop to the upper left, the contrasting blue and yellow galaxy colors, the disturbed cores and arms, and the bright star clusters. It is too bad that we are not closer for a better look at the fascinating object.

The tiny but bright bluish point of light slightly above exactly midway between NGC 7585 and NGC 7592 is the 18th magnitude quasar B2315-049, which is on the order of 10 billion light years away based on its redshift.
