Arp 1 (with Arp 285)

This image captures two Arp objects located in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +49 degrees.

The beautiful face-on spiral galaxy at top left is Arp 1, also known as NGC 2857. This 12.3 magnitude galaxy is 240 million light years away and spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 140,000 light years. This galaxy was classified by Arp under the category of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies. The galaxy shows no signs of disturbance - just perfectly formed arms and symmetry. Many other small galaxies are seen near Arp 1. The small smudge immediately left and above Arp 1 is the galaxy SDSS J092445.36+492234.2, located 2.3 billion light years away.

Arp 285 is the pair of galaxies at lower right, located much closer than Arp 1 at 130 million light years away. The larger galaxy on the right, NGC 2854, spans 1.8 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years. The other galaxy is NGC 2856. Both galaxies appear to be somewhat disturbed from their gravitational interaction.
