Description

I am really enjoying the Sol'Ex spectro-heliograph !

This time, I tested it with a TeleVue Powermate 2x on H-ɑ (and a Hoya filter ND12 on the front lens of the 71/342 refractor), and I really get much better resolution ! Don’t hesitate to zoom on this large image !

I also tested the Calcium lines, by recording the spectrum in the H absoprtion line (very close to K). It seemed harder to get a perfect focus, and the image is of a lesser quality than the H-ɑ I did without the Barlow. I will have to test again and try with a Barlow as well.

The Dopplergram comes from the shot of H-ɑ (you just shift left and right, 2 to 5 pixels , to get your images around the H-ɑ line) and then you assemble them in PI by assigning one to Red, the other to Blue, and the average of both to green.

Last but not least the continuum picture was made using a Baader Herschel prism and a continuum filter. I could definitely have rebuild the continuum from the SER file of the H-ɑ recording, by going away from the absorption line, but wanted to get it without the problems induced by the atmospheric turbulence, that tends to "hash" the limb of the sun due to the acquisition and reconstruction process of the spectro heliograph. Indeed, the time dimension of the SER file is used to rebuild the missing spatial one, so you cannot perform lucky imaging using the spectro-heliograph.
