NGC 4490 "The Cocoon Galaxy." In Canes Venatici. LRGB

NGC 4490, also known as the Cocoon Galaxy, is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici. It lies at a distance of 25 million light years from Earth. It interacts with its smaller companion NGC 4485 and as a result is a starburst galaxy. NGC 4490 and NGC 4485 are collectively known in the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies as Arp 269.

With the demise of the Atik 314L, I attached my original camera the tiny chipped Atik Titan Mono. The fov is an astonishing 658x492. Programmes like SGPro have made using this camera a lot easier, as a main problem I had using my old goto hand controller and EQMod, was actually getting the target into the fov. You could be one fov away and set off in the wrong direction, never to find the subject.

The "Cocoon," sits nicely in the fov. Although my eyes see a penguin looking at me. This is around 8 hours of data, which took longer to register due to the lack of stars, which is another drawback on the small fov, getting a good focus on 6 recognised stars is yet another challenge.

Description: Having taken a new set of calibration frames for the Atik Titan. I found the flats weren't taking. I finally found the reason, I'd mistakenly applied the masterbias to my dark frames. I've since re-made the darks and flats which work.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
