Description

This edge-on spiral galaxy is located 55 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +50 degrees.  It is a magnitude 11.3 galaxy which spans 8 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 130,000 light years, slightly larger than our Milky Way.

The near side of the galaxy is at the bottom, with the core peaking at us over the dust lanes.  A faint arm extension extends to the right, making the core look offset to the left.  This is one of the few images I have published where north is down, not up.  I always like to see the near galaxy edge at the bottom.

The bright star in the foreground is the 8th magnitude star HD 105823.

To the right of NGC 4157, a cluster of distant galaxies forms a unique “L” shape.
