Description

Simeis 147, also cataloged as  Sharpless 2-240 or SNR G180.0-01.7, is a faint supernova remnant straddling the border between the constellations Auriga and Taurus.   Discovered in 1952, this remnant is 3000 light years from earth.

This image was obviously inspired by Gary Lopez's award winning image created about three years ago.  I was so taken by his composition I really couldn't see this target any other way.  The strong compositional elements of the structure's arc starting in the lower left corner, the inclusion of the filament loops and the dust cloud drawing the eye to the center are all reasons this composition is so strong.  I hope I have done it justice.  I had the advantage of the last three years of image processing software development, especially StarXT, that made this image much easier to process than what Gary had to contend with for his version.
