Description

This object is a super-thin edge-on galaxy located 85 million light years away in the constellation of Bootes at a declination of +40 degrees. This 13.5 magnitude galaxy spans almost 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 150,000 light years.

I find the thinness of this galaxy to be incredible. It is almost 20x longer than it is wide. It also has no central bulge. The only sign of the core is a faint yellow tint to the central region. Numerous bright blue star clusters are seen in the disk but no dark dust lane. A slight warp is seen on the left edge of the disk.

This image is fun to examine in the Astrobin inverted view. The galaxy and its star clusters stand out, as well as the many background galaxies. I like the colorful double star just below the object.

In my Astrobin collection of Super-thin Galaxies, I believe this one is the thinnest.
