Description

At a latitude of 33.5 degrees south here in the Central West of NSW, Australia, we are well placed to observe the "Clouds of Magellan", the distinct irregular galaxies located near the southern celestial pole. Both the small (SMC) and large (LMC) Magellanic Clouds are replete with many deep sky objects that are fascinating to visual observers and imagers. We can find all manner of emission nebula, super nova remnants, globular clusters and others with many fascinating shapes and twirls and knots of nebulosity.

This image captures an area of nebulosity surrounding the globular cluster NGC2004, an area rich in Hydrogen Alpha (Ha) and OIII and with a reasonable amount of SII gas present. For this presentation, the RGB data has been combined with the Ha and OIII to present an RGBHOO image. The combination of Ha and OIII was achieved by processing the Ha and OIII masters separately in their starless form and then using the Pixinsight Pixelmath process to mix this data in with the processed RGB non linear master. The resulting image shows off the complex interaction between the different elements in the nebulae overlaid on a busy star field that includes a number of fine globular clusters. Peering further into the image also shows up a a number of background galaxies.

Edit: Revision B. I felt that the image needed a bit of a lift so went back and applied some extra curves to brighten and increased the saturation.
