Description

This image of the North America Nebula was taken with a one-shot-color (OSC) camera from two different imaging locations, one a dark sky site (~ Bortle 3) and the other a suburban neighborhood (~ Bortle 6).  An Optolong L-Quad Enhance broadband filter was used in both locations and lights from both locations were integrated and processed together.  For the heck of it, I tried applying a false color palette (HOO) to the image to try to differentiate between the hydrogen and oxygen components of the object.  I liked the way it looked and how it helped accomplish that task, so here it is...

The North America Nebula (Cataloged as NGC 7000 or Caldwell 20) is a large emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus.  The shape of this nebula looks a lot like the continent it was named after and covers an area more than four times the size of the full moon.  From the northern regions of Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, this is one nebula whose name becomes obvious right away.
